CANNABIS should be legalised, according to thousands of Scots.

More than 220,000 people in the UK have signed a petition calling on the Government to legalise the drug, sparking a parliamentary debate.

A total of 564 people from Glasgow Central have signed the petition. Close behind is Glasgow North, where one person in every 172 has put their name to it.

A total of 22,620 Scots are backing the petition.

Scottish constituencies feature 12 times in the top 25 seats with the highest proportions of pro-cannabis signatories.

It is currently a Class B drug carrying a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison if users are caught in possession.

But the Government seem unmoved by the campaign.

They said: “Substantial scientific evidence shows cannabis is a harmful drug that can damage human health.

“There are no plans to legalise cannabis as it would not address the harm to individuals and communities.”
