Free-thinking Brighton wants to legalise cannabis more than anywhere else in Britain, Mirror Online can reveal.

Nearly 1,000 people in the Green Party's only seat backed a landmark petition which will be debated in Parliament tomorrow.

The Mirror's data unit analysed the publicly-given addresses of the 220,000 people who have signed the petition - which claims legalisation could raise £900m a year.

What we found was 954 signatures in Green MP Caroline Lucas' seat Brighton Pavilion, one for every 112 residents.

It was followed closely by student-heavy Bristol West, a former Lib Dem seat represented by Labour's Thangam Debbonaire. One in 120 residents there backed the petition.

Also in the top five are Glasgow Central, Glasgow North and Brighton Kemptown.

Not a single Tory seat was in the 10 most likely to back the sale, production and smoking of the Class B drug.

But the least likely seat of all is held by an Ulster Unionist in Northern Ireland.

Tom Elliott, who represents Fermanagh and South Tyrone, saw just one in 740 of his constituents sign the controversial bid.

MPs will hold a three-hour debate in Westminster Hall tomorrow on making the sale, production and use of cannabis legal after the petition became the third most popular on Parliament's website.

Labour MP Paul Flynn, who has campaigned for more than a decade to allow the drug for medicinal use, will lead the debate.

But despite the debate not yet taking place, the government has already laid down the law and said it believes current restrictions are right.

An official reply admitted legalising the drug could boost the taxman but claimed 'substantial scientific evidence shows cannabis is a harmful drug that can damage human health'.

It added: "There are no plans to legalise cannabis as it would not address the harm to individuals and communities.

"Cannabis can unquestionably cause harm to individuals and society.

"Legalisation of cannabis would not eliminate the crime committed by the illicit trade, nor would it address the harms associated with drug dependence and the misery that this can cause to families."
