US: Cannabis community marching on Westminster to demand legalisation

Western Gazette

Sunday 11 Oct 2015

A group of cannabis activists are heading to Westminster to call for the legalisation of the substance.

A debate will be held at Westminster Hall, London, on Monday after an online petition calling for the legalisation of cannabis gathered more than 220,000 signatures.

The Avon and Somerset Cannabis Community is a group of citizens who believe that cannabis prohibition is counterproductive and not an effective way of dealing with users. They campaign for the legal use of cannabis for consenting adults and those with illnesses that could be treated by it.

David Smith, 27, has been a cannabis campaigner for several and says that cuts to the local police force mean that time and resources are wasted enforcing a law that 'does not work'.

He said: "The prohibition of cannabis is a counter-productive and costly failure that is fuelling crime within our communities. There is evidence around the world to suggest that regulation, education and treatment are far more effective approaches to a substance that is safer than alcohol and has proven medical benefits."

The online petition calling for the legalisation of cannabis currently has more than 221,000 signatures, making it the third most signed petition, behind one appealing for increased support for refugee migrants and another calling for a vote of no confidence in Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. E-petitions reaching 100,000 signatures must be considered for debate in Parliament.

The subject was debated in October 2014 but only 21 out of 650 MPs attended, with the government issuing a response that stated the substance is harmful and that there are no plans for legalisation.

Mr Smith is encouraging all MPs in the Avon and Somerset area to attend the debate.
