UK: Should cannabis be legalised? This Labour MP thinks so Nicole Morley The Metro Sunday 11 Oct 2015 The Labour MP for Newport thinks the all-out ban on marijuana needs to be lifted and government should stop being so ‘timid’. A petition to make the sale, use and production of cannabis legal has already reached more than 220,000 signatures, and it’s believed that legislation legalising the Class B drug could raise £900million a year. The government insist there’s scientific evidence to show that using marijuana is harmful, but Flynn compares Britain’s drug policies to alcohol prohibition in 1920s America. Tomorrow there will be a three-hour debate about marijuana in Parliament. Flynn said: ‘Prohibition increases drug use, harm and crime. It builds empires of criminals as the prohibition did in America in the twenties. ‘Criminal, irresponsible black market being replaced by decriminalised regulated markets can reduce drugs harm and liberate the sick to use the world’s most ancient medicine.’ ‘The bad news is that UK has the worst of all worlds. We waste billions on arresting and imprisoning cannabis users for taking a substance that is less harmful than alcohol,’ he wrote in a Mirror blog. He acknowledges the health risks of cannabis are real, but significantly reduced if the substance is eaten, drunk or invested in vapour form. http://metro.co.uk/2015/10/11/should-cannabis-be-legalised-this-labour-mp-thinks-so-5433960/
