Australia: Federal legislation bid lifts hopes on medicinal cannabis relief Nick Clark NT News Wednesday 10 Feb 2016 Amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967 introduced to federal Parliament yesterday will allow the controlled cultivation of cannabis through a single national licensing scheme. “If passed, this legislation will open the way for Australians with painful and chronic conditions to get access to the relief they needed where this was determined by their doctors to be of potential benefit,” federal Health Minister Sussan Ley said. “This is an important day for Australia and the many advocates who have fought long and hard to challenge the stigma around medicinal cannabis products.” The move was welcomed by other federal and state politicians, including Tasmanian Health Minister Michael Ferguson. “We have been working with other states and the Federal Government to reach this point,” Mr Ferguson said. “We recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the NSW Government to further develop our understanding of a range of issues around trials and cultivation. “The tabling of legislation is a significant step towards bringing long-awaited relief for Tasmanian families who rely on cannabis to treat their loved ones.’’ The Royal Australasian College of Physicians also welcomed the legislation. http://www.ntnews.com.au/news/story-template/federal-legislation-bid-lifts-hopes-on-medicinal-cannabis-relief/news-story/110073583318252eaeb9e2860cfc38a0
