In a ruling handed down in Denpasar District Court on Thursday, a panel of judges rejected the prosecution's application for the death penalty to be imposed. Defence lawyers are to appeal the sentence. The Jakarta Post reported that the parents of the convicted man, Michael Loic Blanc, 27, were distraught when the verdict was announced. Blanc was arrested at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport on December 26, when suspicious security officers opened the scuba tanks and found them packed with 189 rolls and 178 packets of hashish. The defendant, who had flown into the resort island on a tourist visa from India via Bangkok, told his trial that the tanks belonged to a friend of his in Bombay, and that he had no knowedge of the drugs they held. But chief judge Ni Nyoman Mariati said Blanc has planned to sell the drugs in Bali. "The defendant violated paragraph 1 of article 82 of the Law No. 22/1997 on drugs and psychotropics," which covers trafficking, Mariati said, after deliberating for less than one hour. At least five foreigners, one Angolan and four Nepalese, have been sentenced to death in Indonesia in the past year on drugs charges. None of the sentences have been carried out so far. In addition several high profile figures including television entertainers, the grand daughter-in-law of former president Suharto and the son of an Indonesian general have been handed jail terms. Officials have said that Indonesia's islands have become a major transit point for international syndicates shipping drugs from South Asia to Europe and Canada as well as a lucrative target market. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Legalize!
