A Cambridgeshire woman who has endured horrific nerve pain for 11 years has launched a petition calling for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis.

The Wimpole resident, who does not want to be named, suffers from Peripheral Neuropathy (PN), chronic nerve pain which gives her a burning feeling in her feet, legs and more recently hands. Over the years, she has been prescribed numerous drugs to try and dull the pain but nothing has worked.

To keep her feet cool she wears open-toed sandals all year round and at night time has the air conditioning on in an effort to sleep.

The 71-year-old tried cannabis when she was in Amsterdam - and found she got instant relief - after a colleague with multiple sclerosis (MS) said it was the only way to alleviate her pain.

"I may be elderly but I might have another 10 or 20 years yet and I don't want to keep increasing my medication, which will lead to taking even more to cope with the side effects of the original drugs," she told the News. "What a system we are made to tolerate and pay for, I believe the NHS could save thousands of pounds? None of the prescribed drugs I've been given help with nerve pain so like thousands of others I'm left to endure it."

The woman, who can spend nights on end without sleep because of the pain, said in the warmer months it was particularly unbearable.

"In the summer I have a terrible time because it's when I warm up the pain is like being burnt," she said. "I get stabbing pains, it's like having razer blades. Sometimes I have to get ice out and put my feet in that.

"We used to walk a lot we can't do that now. I like gardening but I can't use the balls of my feet so I can't kneel down and I can't reach up. It's horrendous. Nothing has ever done anything for the pain."

Her husband said: "I've watched my wife suffer for some years now with her PN . Nothing the doctors give her will help."

The debate on whether the drug should be used for medicinal purposes is being addressed in a current storyline on ITV soap Coronation Street. Viewers have already seen wheelchair-bound Izzy Armstrong tempted by an offer of cannabis to help cope with the pain of her disability which is expected to spark some debate around the legal dilemma facing those who want to take it.

But for the Wimpole resident, using illegal cannabis is not an option.

"I would like it to be done properly," she added. "It's the risk of having something that's mixed with something else."
