UK: Should cannabis shops be made legal in Swansea Bay?

THE long-running debate over whether cannabis should be made legal has just moved on a step.

The Lib Dems have become the first mainstream party to back the legalisation of the drug.

If the proposal ever became law, we could see cannabis shops opening up across Swansea Bay.

1. In August, 2014, Wales became the first part of the UK to approve a cannabis-based drug for people with multiple sclerosis.

2. Hospital admissions involving poisoning due to cannabinoids (found in cannabis) rose 5.6 per cent to 778 in 2014/15, compared with the previous year.

3. In the last five years hospital admissions involving cannabinoids have more than doubled.

4. Cannabinoids were the most frequently reported substance involved in hospital admissions for young people (0-24 years) in 2014/15 - a total of 252, 8.6 per cent up on the previous year.

5. Cannabis has become the most common substance cited by young people (0-24 years) for referral to substance misuse treatment services in 2014/15. There were 1,263 assessments, an increase of 2.4 per cent on the previous year.

6. In contrast, there were 15,114 alcohol-specific admissions in Wales in 2014.

The Lib Dem proposals would see licensed shops able to sell cannabis to over 18s, the strength of cannabis regulated, smokers allowed to grow plants at home, and plain packaging carrying health information used.

According to figures, 6.1% of under 59-year-olds in Wales said they smoked cannabis at least once last year.
