UK: POLL: Do you agree with the Lib Dems that cannabis should be legalised?

Herts and Essex Observer

Tuesday 15 Mar 2016

The Liberal Democrats have voted for an end to pot prohibition at the party's spring conference in York.

At the weekend members backed a new report calling for the legalised sale of marijuana through licensed outlets, including "cannabis social clubs".

The party said cannabis should no longer be criminalised and instead backed a "regulated market" to control the pricing, potency and packaging of sales to over-18s.

Cannabis is currently classified as a Class B drug, with possession carrying a maximum sentence of five years in jail or an unlimited fine. Those supplying or producing cannabis face even tougher penalties, with up to a maximum of 14 years in jail.

But the Lib Dems argue the "war on drugs" has failed and that police resources are being wasted implementing pointless laws.
