UK: First pro-cannabis public demo takes place in Omagh

URTHER events are expected in Omagh after a small group of people took part in the town’s first ever public demonstration calling for the legalisation of cannabis on Saturday.

Organised by the Omagh Medicinal Cannabis Support Group, the ‘Big Patient Group Selfie’ involved around three dozen people walking to the OASIS Plaza for a group photograph.

While participants were offered the chance to hide their identity for the photograph, in the end, all faced the camera.

“People had the option to turn their backs and not one person did,” said Barry Brown, who will stand for the Assembly election on May 5 under the CISTA (Cannabis is Safer Than Alcohol) banner.

“There were people from all over the country, from Monaghan, Derry and Belfast. It shows there’s a great hunger for medical cannabis out there.”

“Hopefully those people who wanted to come will not feel as afraid this time.”

A further demonstration is expected to take place in Omagh on April 20.

The date 20/4 (or 4/20 in the American calendar), has become synonymous with cannabis culture.

“It will be respectful of the town and won’t be when school kids are around,” said Mr Brown.
