UK: 'Cannabis is here to stay, don't let blue rinse brigade tell you otherwise' - readers' views
Grimsby Telegraph Friday 25 Mar 2016 What you said: Grez Taylor: "I don't smoke weed but....I think allowing people to legally grow say 4-6 plants for personal use would drop the price drastically and stop people going out thieving for money for weed. May be wrong but that's my thoughts." Spencer Rik: "Cannabis isn't a gateway drug, alcohol is a way bigger gate way drug then cannabis is. Cannabis unlike alcohol and tobacco isn't addictive. Habitual yes, but not addictive. It dosn't cause psychosis either. The person has to have the onset of it in the first place. Alcohol and tobacco are a massive drain on the NHS. Look on how well it's done in the USA and also Amsterdam. Don't forget alcohol and tobacco are way, way more dangerous drugs then cannabis is. Why is it socially acceptable to go get 'smashed' out of your face at the weekend, lose a day after with a hangover but it's not social acceptable to Vape, eat or smoke cannabis. It's not a dirty drug like people think. Remember some people need alcohol, tobacco and even caffeine to function through out the day. The body doesn't need cannabis to function. Karen Odom: "Legalise it. Government keep bleating about how skint the country is. It's working extremely well over here in the States. And since the Brit Gov seem to follow suit of the Americans, it's high time they cashed in on it too. No, I don't smoke weed nor do I drink alcohol. But I am a firm believer that weed should be legal. For financial gain for government. Also, weed as a medicinal purpose is fantastic to those suffering chronic illnesses/diseases." Julian Niemiec: "Have a look at the USA. Cannabis is very, very safe in its natural form (please look at the facts if you disagree) There have been six deaths reported in the UK and, on further investigations, all six were dismissed as the deaths had other causes." Francis Wood: "Fully expected Martin Vickers to be against it. He's typical of the blue rinse brigade. Cannabis is here to stay and no army of politicians is going to make it go away. Why not regulate it? Why not earn revenue from it. The Chancellor is bleating how skint the country is. While we are at it why not legalise prostitution. Tax revenue, proper medical care and check ups, taken out of the hands of the crooks. I know putting it in the hands of the government is not much better than the crooks who already run the industry but at least the sex workers will be a little safer and there will be better controls on STDs. May even lead few sex offences." Gary Arnold: "It needs to be controlled. Like alcohol, you can't just allow people to turn up to work stoned, or drive under the influence, this will not save police time as they'll be just testing people by the roadside more that's all . It just shifts one problem to another, it's not going to stop black market trading as people still buy cheap fags and beer even though fags and beer are legal, wake up for god's sake people will still deal drugs no matter what you do." Adam Holiday: "A huge part of the British Empire was forged around the hemp trade. Cannabis and hemp plants offer a multitude of uses, both recreational and industrial. Have the stuff grown in troubled areas of the world like Afghanistan, thus replacing the opium plantations, instigating trade deals and perhaps going somewhere to promote a bit of world peace." Carol Taylor-Roberts: "I agree with this but the only thing that worries me is the fact that it could lead to some people going on to harder drugs? Drugs are bad and ruin lives and destroy families." Damian Ross: "Difficult choice really. You will always get people saying legalise it, however I'm sure there have been studies done which concluded it causes dementia at an early age, and causes other illnesses. After doing a job that works with people who use cannabis...and seeing what effect it can have on so many of the users...I'd suggest not legalising it. I know however my view won't be popular." http://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/Cannabis-stay-don-t-let-blue-rinse-brigade-tell/story-28986862-detail/story.html
