Canada: B.C. cannabis activist charged with drug trafficking in Calgary Michael Franklin Calgary Herald Thursday 07 Apr 2016 At about 8:30 p.m., police attended a cannabis rally at a hotel in the 3800 block of Macleod Trail on the information that the organizer would be distributing marijuana seeds, an illegal substance, at the event. Once the seeds had begun to be handed out, one of the organizers went to retrieve more stock from a van in the parking lot. Uniformed officers arrested him. A CPS inspector then spoke to the rally organizer, who continued to distribute the packets of seeds. He was then arrested without incident. The van, owned by the organizers, was searched and police seized: 119 grams of marijuana (worth about $1,190) 1,097 grams of marijuana seeds (worth approximately $30,000) a small amount of cannabis resin and oil Dana Larsen, 44, of Vancouver, is charged with one count of trafficking marijuana and one count possession for the purpose of trafficking. The first man, arrested at the van, was released without charge. Larsen is a marijuana activist, who vowed to give away one million cannabis seeds to Canadians in his coast-to-coast trip speaking about pot legalization. Calgary was Dana Larsen’s second stop on his 14 city tour and the meeting included a segment where attendees received packets of marijuana seeds. According to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, no person shall traffic in an illegal substance such as cannabis regardless of whether payment is provided. Supporters of Larsen were quick to protest his arrest on Wednesday night. "There’s lots of support here in Calgary and I think once I pack up my stuff in my room, all these folks here are going to go down to - show me where to go because I don’t know how to get there – I think we’re going to get Dana Larsen out of jail tonight,” said Cindy Heemeryck. “I think there are a lot of people that are against it and this is a good way for me to inform them about what cannabis really does to people. They just think it gets you stoned – that’s not what it is,” said Sebastian Campbell, a cannabis user at the meeting. Larsen, while being arrested, emphasized that he would not be stopping his tour. “We are going to be giving away more seeds. We will make change together.” His next stop is in Edmonton later on Thursday. Larsen was released from custody and is expected to appear in court on May 18. http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/b-c-cannabis-activist-charged-with-drug-trafficking-in-calgary-1.2849172#_gus&_gucid=&_gup=Facebook&_gsc=mDOHzmW
