UK: (London)Mayoral candidates announced
londonelects.com Friday 01 Apr 2016 12 candidates will stand to become the Mayor of London for the next four years. London Elects has also published the list of candidates that will stand to become the 11 London-wide Members of the London Assembly. The candidates standing for the 14 Constituency Member seats on the London Assembly are announced by the relevant Constituency Returning Officer. The candidates will also be listed on the London Elects website. The candidates standing for the Mayor of London (in the order they’ll appear on the ballot paper and with their chosen party description) are: BERRY Sian Rebecca Green Party FURNESS David British National Party GALLOWAY George Respect (George Galloway) GOLDING Paul Britain First - Putting British people first GOLDSMITH Zac The Conservative Party Candidate HARRIS Lee Eli Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol KHAN Sadiq Aman Labour Party LOVE Ankit One Love Party PIDGEON Caroline Valerie London Liberal Democrats WALKER Sophie Women's Equality Party WHITTLE Peter Robin UK Independence Party (UKIP) ZYLINSKI Prince Independent Greater London Returning Officer, Jeff Jacobs, said: “The Mayor and the London Assembly hold important and powerful roles. The winning Mayoral candidate will be responsible for issues that affect every Londoner – from transport and policing, to housing and the environment – with an annual budget of about £16billion. It’s up to the 5.8million Londoners who are eligible to vote to make a decision on who will run the capital for the next four years. Our website www.londonelects.org.uk tells you who is standing in your area and what the Mayor and London Assembly Members are responsible for. Remember also to look out for the booklet coming through your letter box in April.” Voters will receive three ballot papers when they go to vote: one for the Mayor, one for the London-wide Assembly Members and one for the Constituency Assembly Members. 12 political parties are standing to win the 11 London-wide London Assembly seats. Fourteen London Assembly Members are also elected to represent London’s 14 Assembly Constituencies. Nominations for the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections closed at 4pm on March 31. The Greater London Returning Officer has published the list as required by law before 4pm on Monday April 4. A list of parties and independent candidates standing in the London-wide contest can be found below. London Elects will send an information booklet to each of London’s 5.8 million registered voters shortly, with a ‘mini-manifesto’ from 10 of the Mayoral candidates, the full list of Assembly candidates and information about how to vote. To include a mini-manifesto in the booklet, candidates were required to pay a £10,000 fee set in law. Important dates: These dates apply to both the Mayor and the London Assembly. Polling station voting: Thursday 5 May 2016 (polling stations open from 7am to 10pm) Count commences: Friday 6 May (8am) If you are registered to vote, you should have received your poll card already. The last day to register to vote in the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections is 18 April 2016. To vote by post, electors need to register as a postal voter by 5pm Tuesday the 19th of April.
