UK: Police given drug seizures targets

A new phase in the war against drugs has been unveiled by deputy justice minister Iain Gray as he ordered police to up drugs seizures by 25% over the next four years. The targets were immediately backed by police and anti-drugs campaigners, with Jim Orr, director of the Scottish Drugs Enforcement Agency calling them rightly challenging. But at exactly the same time as Mr Gray announced the moves in a drugs project in Easter Queenslie another death added to the grim toll of addiction on Scottish communities. The grim discovery of 22-year-old Colin Standlick's body in a house in Paisley came at exactly the same time as Mr Gray unveiled the plans. Police found the body in Tummel Way in the town and once formally confirmed, the dead man will become the 104th victim of drugs in the Strathclyde Police area so far this year. The targets include a 25% rise in the number of offences recorded by Scottish police forces for supply, or possession with intent to supply. And ministers also want a 25% reduction in drug-related deaths by 2005, a 20% cut in the proportion of drug misusers who inject, and a 25% fall in the proportion of youngsters using - or being offered - drugs.
