Alabama lawmakers have passed a bill that would decriminalize medical marijuana oil possession for patients with debilitating medical conditions in the state, according to a Times Free Press report.

Alabama’s Senate voted 29-3 on Wednesday to push the bill forward, and Representatives voted 95-4 earlier this month in favor of the measure. Supporters say the bill will help patients and families struggling with certain debilitating medical conditions such as severe epileptic seizures.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive oil extracted from marijuana, has shown significant promise as a treatment for reducing seizures in children with intractable epilepsy.

Sen. Paul Sanford (R-Huntsville) said the bill to decriminalize marijuana oil possession would allow families to seek out this medical treatment without the fear of arrest or prosecution, as reported by the Montgomery Advertiser.

“This is really an opportunity to add some sunlight,” Sanford said. “They don’t want to feel like criminals. They know they need something like this.”
