US: Maine will vote on marijuana legalization this November Emily Gray Sun Times Extract Wednesday 27 Apr 2016 Maine voters will decide this November whether or not to join the growing number of states where marijuana is legal for adult recreational use. Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced Wednesday that supporters of a state marijuana legalization ballot initiative have cleared the minimum threshold of 61,123 valid signatures to move forward, as reported by WMTW. The announcement came after Maine’s chief justice threw out Dunlap’s earlier attempt to reject thousands of petition signatures over a supposed notary signature mismatch. The legalization initiative backed by the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol will now go before state lawmakers. They can choose to pass the measure outright or put the question to voters on the November ballot. “It is time to redirect our state’s limited law enforcement resources toward addressing serious crimes instead of enforcing failed prohibition policies. And it is time to stop punishing adults for using a substance that is significantly less harmful than alcohol,” David Boyer, campaign manager for the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, said in a release. The proposed law would allow adults 21 and older in Maine to possess and grow limited amounts of cannabis for personal use. The measure would establish a regulated system for cannabis cultivation, testing and retail sales, and would create a 10 percent sales tax for recreational marijuana. Those taxes would go towards implementing the new law and enforcing its regulations. Cities and towns would have the right to permit or prohibit marijuana establishments to operate in their jurisdictions. http://extract.suntimes.com/news/10/153/18915/maine-will-vote-recreational-marijuana-legalization-november
