ABQ boy who suffered 100+ seizures each day nearly a year seizure-free after using cannabis oil

A 5-year-old Albuquerque boy has suffered from around 115 seizures a day for most of his life. His parents worried he'd never live a normal life, but that outlook is changing after they discovered cannabis oil could solve his problems.

"It's the most gut-wrenching experience I've ever had in my life," said Diego Baca, the father of Abryn Baca. "I've never been through anything like that – anything as heartbreaking when you're holding your 1 and 2-year-old child that's seizing pretty much constantly and knowing there's nothing you can do."

It's hard to imagine, but that was life for the Baca family as they struggled to help Abryn live life as normally as possible.

Abryn's father says traditional medicine made him worse.

"We were literally out of options," Diego said. "His doctor said I have nothing else to try."

So the Baca family refused to give up and started doing some research. Baca says he found a medical cannabis program in Colorado and decided to give it a shot.

"We got a little bit of pushback from the state initially because he was only 3," Diego said. "At the time, he was the youngest – and I believe he might be the youngest in the program."

But Baca says he pushed until they approved. Abryn was started on a strain called "Charlotte's Web" – known for being low in THC, the psychoactive component that gets users high.

Instead, the strain is high in CBD, the component that has been show to help with epilepsy.

Diego says that as of May 13, Abryn will have been seizure-free for a whole year.

"Going from that amount of seizures per day – seven days a week, in his sleep, in the wee hours of the morning, during his naps, while he's eating – and now for there to be done, for us to be coming up on a one-year anniversary seizure free...it's hard to wrap my head around that."

Baca says now he just wants other families to know there is hope and other options out there for anyone who lives in as much pain as Abryn once did..New Mexico Brief Relief is hosting the Duke City Medical Cannabis convention this weekend at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Albuquerque. Medical professionals and industry experts will be able to provide resources and education on medical cannabis at the 18+ event.
