US: Cannabis legalization rally in downtown Lafayette Alexandra Kruczek/Kayla Sullivan wlfi.com Wednesday 11 May 2016 Higher Fellowship, an Indianapolis-based civic group, is hosting the event at the Tippecanoe County Courthouse from noon until 4 p.m. The rally will feature speakers such as Indiana Libertarian Party Chairman Joe Hauptmann as well as the co-founders of Higher Fellowship. One co-founder David Phipps joined us live from the rally on News 18 at Noon on Wednesday to tell us more about the event. He said they are there for two reasons. Phipps said they need to draw attention to the issue. Hoosiers need to tell Legislators that this law, which he said should have never been enacted in the first place, needs to be changed. But he also added it’s going to take community involvement to make this change. “The studies show the majority of the state wants it legalized, but it’s going to take citizen participation to get it done,” Phipps said. A recent AAA study shows that marijuana-related crashes have increased in state’s that have legalized marijuana. But Phipps agrees it’s an issue that should be dealt with and regulated just like alcohol. “I think cannabis should be legalized and regulated as alcohol is,” Phipps said. “I think it has too much medicinal and agricultural benefits to our citizens to keep it outlawed.” Organizers are hoping for around 100 people to come out. We will have more on who was in attendance and community reaction coming up later on News 18 at Five and Six. http://wlfi.com/2016/05/11/cannabis-legalization-rally-in-downtown-lafayette/
