Bulgaria’s National Assembly voted down Thursday the proposal for using opium, poppy straw, cannabis, hashish, and hash oil for medical purposes, FOCUS News Agency reported.

The proposal was submitted by non-attached MP Velizar Enchev.

The parliament passed the amendments tabled by the Council of Ministers.

The MPs voted at second reading on amendments to the Narcotic Substances and Precursors Control Act, accepting narcotic substances could be used for “medical, scientific, and laboratory research and educational purposes”.

The parliament also optimised the regulatory regimes in the field of narcotic substances and control on activities related to medicinal products.
