UK: Poll: Gloucester Citizen readers say: 'Legalise cannabis

Gloucester Citizen

Sunday 22 May 2016

Should cannabis be made legal? The debate has sparked once more about the criminalisation of the class B drug with some saying it is a waste of money for the police to clamp down on its use.

Yesterday the Citizen published an article about Gloucestershire police confirming they will continue to arrest those they find smoking the drug while other forces are turning a blind eye to the practice.

Debate has regularly surrounded the issue of people using marijuana, with some claiming the drug is largely harmless and police resources could be better spent elsewhere.

But others say the drug, upgraded to class B in 2009, does pose serious risks to people's physical and mental health and can lead to addiction.

Many readers believe it would be best to decriminalise the drug, or for the police to focus on other crimes.

One online reader, PReynolds, said: "This is a shockingly irresponsible attitude from Gloucester Police.

"PCC Martin Surl needs to step in and instruct the chief constable to stop wasting taxpayers' money and concentrate on real crime. All over the word more rational and evidence-based policies are taking hold.

"Until the government decides to stand up to the tabloid scaremongering and change the law, the police should be setting their priorities based on what causes harm - and that means cannabis users should be left alone."

Guy Coyle said: It's almost laughable that enforcing cannabis is 'a priority' with all the knife crime in this city.

"I'm not a smoker any more but I still think the laws regarding it are a joke. While I agree hard drug users can be a drain on society, stoners are not hurting anyone."

Beccy Browett said: "Prescription medication is one of the worse culprits in terms of causing drug addiction which not only leads to major health problems but death.

"Many turn to street drugs because their legal 'fix' just isn't doing it for them anymore. I have never metanyone who went onto class A drugs as a direct result of using cannabis.

"As with anything else you will always get people who abuse it rather than use it (to their own peril) but alcohol which is legal leads to far more problems than cannabis does."
