POLICE say the jail term handed to a 61-year-old cannabis grower will send out a 'strong message' to other offenders.

David Jarvis was caught with 52 cannabis plants at a factory he had set up at his home in Donkey Lane, Cheadle.

Observant cops from the town uncovered the crops – which are said to have a street value of around £17,500 – during a routine patrol after smelling the class B drug.

On Friday Jarvis, who was first arrested on December 15, was handed a two year jail term following his guilt plea to production of cannabis.

Paul Bolam, of the Cheadle Problem Solving Team (PST), said: “This sentence sends a strong message out that drug use and drug dealing will not be tolerated in Cheadle.

“We will continue to proactively target those involved in drug supply and seek the strongest possible sentences."

So far this year the PST has executed five warrants under the misuse of drugs act and made 15 arrests.
