UK: Petition calls on government to 'turn Luton into the cannabis capital of the world'

A PETITION has been launched calling on the government to turn Luton into 'the cannabis capital of the world' to rival Amsterdam.

Cannabis is currently a class B drug, and possession of it can lead to a criminal conviction, a fine and up to five years in jail.

There is a longstanding debate as to whether it should be legalised as it is in Amsterdam, where 'coffee shops' legally sell cannabis to the public and allow them to smoke it on the premises.

The creator of the online petition, Ramsey Ismail, clearly sees such an operation working in Luton after setting up a petition on the government's official website.

Ramsey writes: "Cannabis, hardly even worth being called a drug. It's ridiculous to find that possession of a plant can land you jail time or at least a trip to the police station. My proposition is that we turn Luton into a city similar to Amsterdam while keeping the drug illegal for sale in the rest of the country."

Ramsey goes on to say that cannabis would merely be confined to coffee shops so people 'will still be able to stay away from the drug' if they want.

The blurb goes on to say: "This will be a haven for pot smokers knowing that our government is keeping up with the times and won't have to travel to another country to better their economy with our hard earned cash. A big tourist market for a city with an airport."

Progress on the petition is slow, with a mere seven people so far having signed their name to it. In the unlikely event that the petition receives 10,000 signatures, the government would formally respond to the petition.

If it reached a remarkable 100,000 signatures the petition would even be considered for debate in parliament.
