UK: Story of cannabis-eating sheep fears in Swansea Valley flying high

South Wales Evening Post

Wednesday 25 May 2016

Readers – and reporters – have 'flocked' to a story about the possibility of psychotic sheep rampaging through a Swansea Valley village.

The news story about concerns over sheep currently roaming through the village of Craig Cefn Parc near Clydach eating dumped cannabis plants has caused a bit of a stir since it broke early yesterday evening.

The matter was raised by Mawr ward councillor Ioan Richard who has been battling against fly-tipping in the area for years.

In calling for the suspicious material to be removed, he added: "I dread to think what will happen if they eat what could well be cannabis plants – we could have an outbreak out of psychotic sheep rampaging through the village."

The Evening Post has had calls from the BBC and ITV while versions of the story have appeared online in several publications, including the Daily Star.

It has also attracted around 200 likes and 400 shares on Facebook as well as 55 comments from readers.

Most readers had light-hearted take to the story, as reflected in their comments.

Alan Newman said: "Being a high sheep must be baaaaaaad!"

Sally Llewellyn said: "All they'll do is eat more grass lying down."

While Dave Powell said: "Bet the police won't arrest them for possession."

And Diane Britton added: "Now that's the best laugh I've had all day."

However one resident pointed out the serious side to the story saying: "I live in Felindre and these sheep have been roaming the road on and off since before Christmas. So, it's only been a matter of time until something like this happened.

"The police or the RSPCA are not interested in the welfare of the sheep on the road. And for people fly-tipping it is getting worse and worse. Why they do it is beyond me. They have to drive out here to dump it - just drive to the tip."

Of all the interest created a rather sheepish Councillor Ioan Richard said: "I suppose it has put Mawr on the map but not in a good way."
