Canada: Queen St. cannabis dispensary raided by Toronto police
Toronto Metro Thursday 23 Jun 2016 Cannabis Culture, a dispensary in the downtown core, was raided by Toronto police at around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Three officers were seen escorting three people—two woman and one man—from the premises, at 801 Queen St. W. Alex Morris, a witness, said two plainclothes officers entered the dispensary. They were seen searching the inside. Toronto Police haven’t given any details about the raid itself. Bystanders jeered officers removing the three people under arrest. Several complained the raids were a waste of police resources, given promises by the federal Liberals to legalize marijuana sometime next year. “This is turning into such a nanny state. I don’t have any problems with them,” said Rick Davidson, a bystander. He called it “heavy-handed,” saying Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders couldn’t justify earlier mass raids by police on dispensaries. “This hurts no one,” Morris said. He described himself as a recreational marijuana user whose trust in police has been further eroded by this latest set of raids. “I don’t particularly trust Toronto cops,” Morris said. “It seems they have an axe to grind. Thank goodness I’m not native or black.” A Toronto Police news conference scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today, according to the force’s Twitter accout, “has nothing whatsoever to do with cannabis dispensary raids”. Police and city municipal licensing officials targeted 43 locations in May, where 90 people were arrested. In all, 186 possession for the purpose of trafficking charges and 71 proceeds of crime charges were laid. Bylaw officers also laid 79 charges of zoning violations. After those raids, Chief Mark Saunders said that operation, carried out in sync with city licensing staff, were “not an attack on lawful production, distribution or purchasing of marijuana for medical purposes.” Rather, the action was launched due to health concerns over the “unknown and unregulated amount of THC” in dispensary weed and edibles, as well as residents’ complaints about pot shops’ proximity to schools. http://www.metronews.ca/news/toronto/2016/06/23/downtown-dispensary-raided-by-toronto-police.html
