Study finds few negative health effects from long-term cannabis usage Sophia F. Gottfried NorthJersey.com Tuesday 28 Jun 2016 Long-term marijuana usage is not linked to many major health issues, a new study has found. Researchers from the University of Arizona tracked a group of more than 1,000 New Zealanders from birth to age 38, focusing on regular marijuana usage between ages 18 and 38. Checking in regularly through lab tests and self-reports, the researchers found that the only negative health impact was on teeth, with the 38-year-olds who used marijuana suffering from worse periodontal health than their peers. In comparison, long-term tobacco usage has been proven to be linked to a whole host of health problems. Researchers were also surprised to find that long-term cannabis use was also linked with a lower BMI and smaller waist size. Researchers did note that though the study's results reveal fewer health effects of heavy, long-term cannabis use than previously thought, there may still be risks. Health effects past age 38, for example, have yet to be seen. The study was published in JAMA Psychiatry. http://www.northjersey.com/news/health-news/study-finds-few-negative-health-effects-from-long-term-cannabis-usage-1.1622838
