On 25 July, the Italian parliament will debate a bill for the legalisation of cannabis in Italy. The date was put in the diary yesterday during the leaders’ meeting and the text, which is necessary to update Italian laws, especially following the decision to reject the Fini-Giovanardi law, sets out important changes. Primarily it will allow domestic cultivation for personal use for recreational purposes, as well as associated cultivation by non-profit organisations – inspired by the Spanish cannabis social club model. Selling will remain forbidden and sanctioned, while there will be a state monopoly for legally selling the drug. In addition, there will be some forms of authorisation for the production, processing and marketing by private individuals. The changes also include measures to simplify the current bureaucracy associated with the administration of marijuana for therapeutic purposes.
