US: New warning label created marijuana edibles Grace Ditzler KXLY Wednesday 13 Jul 2016 It's a big red hand that kids and parents should become familiar with. A symbol of a red hand will soon be on edible cannabis products sold in Washington state. The Washington Poison Center says it developed the warning symbol as a "deterrent for children who may have access to edible cannabis products purchased by adults in their home." Sam Calvert, the owner of Green Star Cannabis in Spokane, says they currently provides customers with "Mr. Yuk" stickers to put on the edibles in the store. Calvert agrees with the need for labeling. "When it comes to youth prevention, I think we have a responsibility to set up a standardized label that goes on every product that everyone is comfortable with, that serves the young people who might pick it up," he said. Calvert is concerned, however, that the red hand may not be an easily recognizable symbol. "I think with the Mr. Yuk sticker you have history there, so that brand is well established," he explained. "A red hand holding itself up with text, that's going to require new training for young people." The Poison Center says the new symbol will likely be required by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board starting in January 2017. The Poison Center (WAPC) is also creating info sheets to explain the sticker and suggest parents have conversations with kids about the products. http://www.kxly.com/news/spokane-news/new-warning-label-created-marijuana-edibles/40701374
