US: Cannabis church leaders arrested on drug charges

ABC6

Thursday 21 Jul 2016

The leaders of a cannabis church in Rhode Island have been arrested.

56-year-old Anne Armstrong and 46-year-old Alan Gordon are charged with marijuana distribution charges.

"I'm completely disgusted with it. They are my church deacons. They (police) went into a church they took two deacons out that help the people,” said Church Elder Rey Herrera.

On Tuesday state and local police seized 59 marijuana plants,12 pounds of dried marijuana, packaging materials and 10 pounds of hash oil from the church’s West Greenwich property.

"Neither individual that was charged in this case was found to have been issued a caregiver or a patient marijuana card through the Department of Health,” said Captain Matthew Moynihan. "In this case having a marijuana card wouldn't have applied they were in excess of the allowable amount."

The arrest of the duo comes just days after the church leaders filed a federal lawsuit alleging religious discrimination. The suit asks a judge to prevent authorities from taking their plants and trying to prevent them from facing criminal charges.

"We just want religious freedom rights we want to be left alone,” said Herrera.

The group says that they incorporate cannabis in prayer based on their interpretation of the bible.

Back in 2015, Gordon sat down with ABC 6 explaining a little bit about the religion.

"All over the world wherever there is a religion there is a sub current underneath is with cannabis at its origin,” said Gordon.

Wednesday, Herrera emphasized the point that he does not believe either of the Church deacons have done anything wrong.

"They're not criminals,” said Herrera.

Armstrong and Gordon are being held without bail until a court date next month.
