UK NI: Derry man creates 'cannabis club' in the city

Derry Now

Monday 15 Aug 2016

A Derry man has created a”cannabis club” in the city to support calls for the drug to be legalised.

Tony McColgan described the laws surrounding cannabis use as “outdated” and said it should no longer be a crime to use the drug.

The 35-year-old Rosemount man has created the LegenDerry Cannabis Club in a bid, he said, to provoke discussion around the current laws surrounding the use of cannabis

The local club is part of a network of similar clubs throughout Ireland.

Mr McColgan said he had been using cannabis ‘for all of my adult life’.

“In that time I've learned a great deal about cannabis, so much so that I created LegenDerry Cannabis Club,” he said.

“I quickly found most of the people I talked to about cannabis had been brainwashed by the governments propaganda reefer madness and other lies.

“The aim of the clubs is to provide a place where likeminded people can get together and share stories, ask advice and generally learn more about the plant.

“We think of ourselves as a support network for anyone that's suffering due to our outdated laws regarding cannabis.”

Mr McColgan said he had watched American “slowly legalize cannabis” over the last 15 years.

“I believe now is the time to legalize cannabis not only medicinally but also recreational. Why are we always years behind everyone else?

“The evidence is out there for all to see, how can they say cannabis has no medical value yet it's now proven to have immense medical value.

“Our aim is to educate the public, bring people together in a safe environment, a kind of support network for cannabis enthusiasts and medical cannabis users.

“We are not criminals and will not be treated like criminals anymore.”

The Derry man said he worked closely with the other cannabis clubs and ‘cannabis social clubs’ throughout Ireland.

“We've even went so far as to started our own union. We have over 5,000 followers in Derry alone and are getting more and more every day.

“There's a cannabis club in nearly every country in Ireland Derry, Donegal, Belfast, Louth and Wexford just to name just a few.

“We are a global movement that will not stay in the dark any longer.

“We are sick and tired of being treated like criminals for making our own choices as regards to what we put in our own bodies.

“I want cannabis taxed and regulated like in the states where it's making millions in tax.

“It's been proven to free up valuable police time, underage use is down and the government have more money to spend on healthcare, schools and other important areas.

“What has happened in the states has had an overwhelming positive on society.

“The real question now is how long our government will continue to deny chronic pain and other seriously ill people the right to a non-toxic alternative to the toxic pharmaceutical drugs?”
