New Zealand: Protestors light up against cannabis laws

Newshub

Saturday 17 Sep 2016

Police were fairly tolerant of people smoking cannabis outside police stations as part of a national protest.

Four people were arrested without incident for consuming cannabis in Northland and no charges had been laid at this stage, police said.

There were no major issues with the national pro-cannabis protests across the country so far on Saturday, they said.

There were small groups of people outside police stations from about 4pm.

Protest organisers want an immediate stop to all cannabis arrests and are in favour of cannabis being used for medical purposes.

"Police are under-resourced and under-staffed. By removing cannabis arrests from their workload, hundreds of millions of dollars would be saved every year, and time would be freed up for police to address serious crime and more dangerous drugs," organisers said ahead of the event.
