Ukrainian riot police were sent in to pin back nationalists who were trying to prevent a rally in support of legalising cannabis.

The protesters set fire to a cap with a cannabis leaf printed on it in Mikhaylivska Square in Downtown Kiev on Saturday.

A second group had tried to hold a rally to demand marijuana to no longer be classed as a hard drug, demanding it be decriminalised.

But nationalists turned up in their droves to take the sting out of the demonstration by chanting and holding banners reading, 'Sport. Health. Nationalism.'

The other protesters held posters reading 'Freedom for plants, will for people' during a rally for cannabis legalisation.

The clashes appeared to turn ugly with officers with shielded helmets and truncheons forced to restrain a number of demonstrators.
