UK: MP for Potters Bar says wider cannabis use should remain illegal

Thursday 24 Nov 2016

Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden has said he does not think cannabis should be totally legalised following a Government report claiming it should be.

He told the Potters Bar Edition: “I am not convinced that there is a case for wider legalisation. I think the message from the Government, especially for children, should be that drug use is wrong and dangerous.

“In fact, there is growing evidence that cannabis use, particularly new stronger strands, is linked with a number of psychotic conditions.”

However, he added: “I understand the case for legalising cannabis and there may well be a case for doing so for people with medical conditions, where it is proven that cannabis can help ease the symptoms.

“This is something that a number of constituents have raised with me.”
