UK: 'It's not all about stoners': Cannabis club clean up Plymouth street

When you picture vigilante do-gooders kindly cleaning up their neighbourhood, drug users are not usually top of the list.

"It's not all about the stoner sitting on the sofa in the hoodie," says Alastair Philpotts, member of the Plymouth Cannabis Social Club.

Last week businessman Larry Speare complained about rubbish littering the pavements, so the cannabis club – based a few doors away from Mr Speare's Rendle Street warehouse – decided to take matters into their own hands.

Mr Philpotts, aged 38, said: "We saw the article, so we thought we would do a bit of cleaning. We filled four black bags with rubbish."

He says he hopes the good deed will dispel negative attitudes about the club.

"There are a lot of stereotypes about stoners," he said.

"It's not all about people getting stoned out of their heads, it's about helping the community too.

"In future we are planning to do more for the homeless, giving them blankets and making sandwiches, doing more street cleans around the area if we can."

The cannabis club currently has 15 members and hold regular meetings.

"We talk, we socialise, we raise awareness about the medicinal values of cannabis."
