Isle of Man: A 41-year-old Douglas man has admitted ordering cannabis oil and toffee infused with the drug on the dark web to combat his Crohn's Disease.
IOM Today Tuesday 12 Sep 2017 Stuart Watts, of Norwood Drive, was sentenced to a two-year conditional discharge after pleading guilty to a charge of production of a controlled drug to the island. He was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs. Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how, on August 23 at 7.50am, police attended the post office’s sorting office in Douglas with drug detection dogs after a report of a suspicious package. A police dog indicated that the package contained illegal substances and it was subsequently opened. It contained 40 cannabis oil capsules, a small quantity of cannabis bush, and a toffee sweet infused with cannabis. The parcel was addressed to Watts and police went to his address. When officers arrived Watts said to police: ’Is this because of the package at the post office? I’m using it as I’ve just been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease.’ Watts then gave police two pieces of paper which contained a small amount of cannabis oil. A grinder and scales were also recovered from the house. When interviewed Watts told police he bought the cannabis on the dark web and paid using bitcoins. He said he used it to relieve pain caused by Crohn’s Disease. He added that he knew it was an offence but said until his doctor could give him a prescription he felt he had no option. Defending Watts in court his advocate David Reynolds said: ’Mr Watts tells me he is now on prescription medication and his life has improved significantly. ’He says he was in desperate pain and felt he had no alternative. It affected him being able to work. He is a self-employed consultant health and safety officer who works from home.’ The court heard that Watts had no previous convictions, but had received a caution in August 2016 for a similar offence. Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said while passing sentence: ’Production of drugs to the island is always considered serious, even for personal use, because of the danger of the drugs getting into the wrong hands. I have noted it was in the form of oil and a toffee sweet and in order to treat pain. ’You have lost your good character as a result of this offence. You should perhaps have learnt from the caution not to purchase cannabis from the dark web. You admitted it to police and assisted in the search. It is an unusual offence and I will deal with it in an unusual way, by way of a conditional discharge.’ A forfeiture and destruction order was made for the drugs. http://www.iomtoday.co.im/article.cfm?id=35870&headline=Cannabis%20oil%20and%20toffee%20in%20post§ionIs=news&searchyear=2017
