UK: Medicinal cannabis review 'amazing news'
ITV News Tuesday 19 Jun 2018 Charlotte Caldwell called it an “amazing move”, but said she remains cautious and repeated her call to meet with Home Secretary Sajid Javid. It comes after an emergency licence was issued for her son Billy, who suffers from epilepsy, over the weekend. Ms Caldwell said: “I applaud it, amazing news. History again being created, one step closer, but I’m very sceptical and cautious of the process. "When will this panel that he talks about be set up? When will it be implemented? “He mentioned reports, recommendations - when will we have reports and recommendations? “How much of a cost will this be to the families? For me, yes it’s a step closer but I am still calling on the home secretary and the health secretary to meet with myself urgently. “We have to sit down in a dignified democratic manner, we need to get this across the line urgently, so I’m still waiting to hear from them.” Speaking in the House of Commons earlier, Mr Javid said the current position is “not satisfactory for the parents … for the doctors … and not satisfactory for me”. He suggested that if medicinal cannabis is recommended by a professional then it should be used, but insisted that the drug would not be legalised for recreational use. Mr Javid said cases like Billy’s, and others, “have shown we now need to look more closely at the use of cannabis-based medicines in the healthcare sector in the UK”. The calls for change have grown in recent days following widespread outrage over the confiscation from mother Charlotte Caldwell of cannabis oil supplies which she brought from Canada for her son Billy, who has acute epilepsy. The 12-year-old from Co Tyrone was rushed to hospital on Friday night after in a critical condition having suffered multiple seizures. Home Secretary Sajid Javid granted a 20-day emergency licence granting use of the oil. Billy has since been discharged from hospital. The Government says a new expert panel of clinicians will be established to give swift advice on the prescription of cannabis-based medicines to individual patients. http://www.itv.com/news/utv/2018-06-19/medicinal-cannabis-review-amazing-news/
