Australia: Legalised cannabis supported in Braddon poll Leah McBey The Advocate Monday 02 Jul 2018 According to Greens commissioned Essential polling in June, of the 226 Braddon voters asked, 59 per cent said they supported legalising the drug. Braddon Greens candidate Jarrod Edwards said the current system of criminalising young people for cannabis possession or use had a big impact on their lives. If we can take some of that stigma away and make it easier for people ... it can only be a good thing Braddon Greens candidate Jarrod Edwards “In their formative years, if they get charges on their record or a conviction for using or possession, it impacts on their lives. They can’t travel overseas, they find it hard to get jobs or find it hard to work in certain industries.” He said keeping cannabis illegal was wasting society’s resources, which could be diverting from policing cannabis laws into drug treatment and education. “On the court lists you see people going to court for trivial issues like possessing a small amount of marijuana. It clogs up the courts. It takes a lot of resources to police that. “If we can take some of that stigma away and make it easier for people to get on with their lives, it can only be a good thing. “In the countries where it is legalised, it creates revenue and breaks down that stigma.” Greens Leader Richard di Natale said legalising cannabis was not a fringe issue. “We are spending a lot of money criminalising young people, and are diverting money away from the health system instead of into it.” He said Braddon voters had more common sense than the major parties of Labor and the Liberals. “We have laws that are creating harm rather than preventing it. “It is boosting the profits of criminal syndicates and diverting money from where we know it works – in drug treatment and drug education. This is as much a health issue as it is a law and order issue.” Hike in Newstart rates widely supported The Essential poll also asked Braddon voters whether they thought the Newstart allowance for people searching for work should be raised. A majority of 78 per cent agreed, in line with the state average of 78 per cent for and 13 per cent opposed. The biggest support came from Denison voters where 82 per cent agreed and 11 per cent opposed it. https://www.theadvocate.com.au/story/5502145/legalised-cannabis-supported-in-braddon-poll/
