10 years, cane for having ganja

A despatch clerk was jailed 10 years and ordered to be caned 10 times by a
High Court yesterday for possessing 239gm of cannabis.
Mohamad Kamal Mat Ali, 28, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of possessing
the drug at a house at Jalan Hajjah Rahmah, Jelutong at 4.15am on Jan 23,
1998.

According to the facts of the case by DPP Salim Soib, police raided the
house and found Mohamad Kamal asleep on a sofa.

"Police found a canvas bag on the sofa and upon checking it, they recovered
an envelope containing 7gm of cannabis.

"Mohamad Kamal then led police to a fenced area behind the house where he
brought out a plastic package containing a compressed block of ganja and
another envelope with the same drug, stashed in between zinc sheets that
made up the fence,'' DPP Salim said.

DPP Salim urged the court to take into consideration public interest and
increasing problems faced by the society.

Justice Mohamad Noor Abdullah in passing sentence, said the courts have to
pass a sentence which reflected the government's concern about rampant drug
abuse among Malay youth.

He ordered Mohamad Kamal to serve his jail sentence from the date of his
arrest on Jan 23, 1998.
