UK: Boris Johnson hires key supporter of push to legalise cannabis as No10 adviser

A KEY supporter of the push to legalise cannabis was yesterday brought into the heart of No.10 by Boris Johnson.

Blair Gibbs was hired to the growing army of policy advisers in Downing Street.

He worked as the PM’s policing aide when he was Mayor of London – and joins from the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis campaign group.

The hire came a day after Danny Kruger was brought in as Mr Johnson’s political secretary. He has also called for an end to the prohibition of the drug.

The moves forced No10 last night to rush out a statement insisting comments by the pair “do not reflect government policy”.

Mr Kruger in 2017 said: “We do not need to ban everything bad. “After all the Victorians never prohibited alcohol.”

Earlier this week three senior backbench MPs claimed they believed cannabis could be made legal within five to ten years.

Mr Gibbs has been a vocal supporter of Canada’s legalisation policy. And on Twitter earlier this month he said the UK would have to learn from it “when it gets round to legislating to regulate a legal market for recreational cannabis.”

A huge row over the health of 12 year-old epilepsy sufferer Billy Caldwell forced the Home Office last year to relax strict rules about medicinal cannabis.

Former PM Theresa May was adamant about the risks of legalising the drug –dating back to her own time as Home Secretary.

Sajid Javid changed the rules so that thousands of people with drug resistant conditions could benefit from cannabis oil. The UK is the world’s largest exporter and producer of cannabis-based medicines.
