More than a dozen activists joined Gary Youds waving banners calling for the "#Right2Grow"

Pro-cannabis campaigners demonstrated outside court in support of a man accused of growing the drug.

Gary Youds allegedly produced the Class B drug at his home in Cavan Road, Norris Green earlier this year.

The 50-year-old today appeared at Liverpool Crown Court supported by more than a dozen men and women.

He pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis resin on March 3, having previously admitted possessing cannabis.

But the dad-of-two, with short grey hair and glasses, denied producing cannabis at his property on the same date.

Youds, wearing a pink sweatshirt and blue jeans in the dock, spoke only to confirm his personal details and enter his pleas.

Paul Blasbery, prosecuting, said a trial, estimated to last two days, could take place on the week commencing February 24 next year.

Brendan Carville, defending, said his client was on unconditional bail, which was renewed by Judge Thomas Teague, QC.

The judge said: "Your trial will be on the week commencing February 24. Sorry it's so far off in the distance.

"That is the first date a listing officer has been able to provide. It will take place during that week, I can't tell you the precise date."

Youds later posed for photographs outside court with activists calling for the legalisation of the drug.

They held aloft banners in support of "legal cannabis for all adults" and the "#Right2Grow".
