UK: Cannabis plant found in Bristol around once an hour Claire Miller and Andrew McQuarrie Bristol Post Thursday 16 Jan 2020 A cannabis plant is found in Bristol at an average rate of once an hour, according to statistics. The Reach Data Unit has crunched the numbers on the police’s crackdown on drugs over the last couple of years. Avon and Somerset Constabulary seized a total of 7,527 cannabis plants in 2018/19 - up by a third on the previous year’s haul. Inspector Andy Peppin hailed the “hard work and determination” of officers within the force - and went on to describe what it is like to exercise a search warrant. Inspector Peppin said: “It is an exciting thing, but you’re always on guard and there is a slight level of apprehension because you never know what you’re going to find and how the person is going to behave.” Avon and Somerset police found more crack in 2018/19 than in any other year since records began in 2009/10. A total of 1.4kg of the Class A drug was seized in 2018/19, up by 16 per cent on the 2017/18 figure (1.2kg found). The quantity of anabolic steroids found in 2018/19 rose by about 10 per cent - reaching a total of 1,307 doses. Meanwhile, the amount of cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and amphetamines found by police has fallen year on year, according to the data unit. Inspector Peppin leads a team of officers working on Operation Remedy, which is tasked with fighting drugs, knife crime and burglary. Other departments in the police tackle drug-related crime too. Inspector Peppin explained that major raids on industrial premises helped to boost the amount of cannabis seized last year. One of the most memorable achievements, said the inspector, was the find of £1.1 million worth of cannabis plants in Kingswood in September 2019. On some occasions where factory sites are visited, officers encounter robust security systems installed by the offenders, revealed Inspector Peppin. He said: “We’ve had previous instances of officers being put at risk of harm because of set-ups intended to stop other rival gangs raiding their premises.” Sometimes, however, drugs can be discovered in private dwellings, said Inspector Peppin, where concealment methods might include hiding items behind walls or in basements. How often drugs are found in the Avon and Somerset area, according to the Reach Data Unit A gram of cocaine is found every two hours and 39 minutes A gram of crack is found every six hours A dose of ecstasy is found every one hour and 36 minutes A gram of heroin is found every two hours and 49 minutes A dose of methadone is found every 10 hours A dose of morphine is found every 19 hours A gram of herbal cannabis is found every nine minutes A gram of cannabis resin is found every two hours and 38 minutes A cannabis plant is found every one hour and 10 minutes A gram of amphetamines is found every 16 hours A gram of ketamine is found every 20 hours A dose of anabolic steroids is found every seven hours https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/crime-drugs-cannabis-plant-bristol-3742954
