Morocco seizes 13 tons of cannabis

The Moroccan police announced Friday the seizure of 13 tons of cannabis in Casablanca, the North African country economic hub.

According to a statement from the Moroccan police, a tip from intelligence services led police on Thursday night to seize a truck with 11.6 tons of cannabis, which was followed by a car loaded with 1.4 tons of cannabis.

During the operation, one person, aged 39, was arrested for his alleged links to an international drug trafficking ring, and an investigation is underway to identify possible accomplices, it said.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Moroccan security services seized 179,657 kg of cannabis in 2019, according to official statistics. Enditem
