Turkey seizes nearly two tonnes of marijuana in southeast

Sunday 06 Sep 2020

Turkish officials seized over 1.7 tonnes of marijuana and 90 million cannabis roots in the southeastern province of Diyarbak?r, Hürriyet newspaper said on Saturday.

Turkish gendarmerie forces seized 1.4 tonnes of marijuana in powdered form and 305 kilograms as hash during raids in Diyarbak?r's Lice district, Hürriyet said.

The seized marijuana has a street value of 100 million lira ($13.5 million), according to Sabah daily.

Since 2015, Turkish authorities have carried out extensive operations in southeast provinces to destroy the cannabis plantations in the region. The shortfall left by the drop in domestic supplies appears to have been picked up by traffickers bringing cannabis from outside the country.
