Police said those caught in the café had 'no care for themselves' or for 'protecting the lives of others'

Police have slammed a group of 30 males who were caught at a suspected cannabis café in East London.

The café came to the attention of officers through intelligence they received and working with Tower Hamlets Council.

On Thursday, January 28 the Met Police attended a commercial premises on Osbourne Street, in Whitechapel, to issue a misuse of drugs warrant.

When officers arrived a number of males jumped out of windows and onto the roof of a neighbouring building.

Police found 24 people hiding in a void between the buildings while another six remained on the premises during the raid.

All 30 males were reported for £200 fines under Health Protection Regulations and one of the males was also arrested in relation to immigration offences and taken into custody before being passed to the Home Office's immigration team.

A search of the café showed entry was gained via an intercom system, with CCTV set up to monitor those wanting to get inside

Chief Inspector Pete Shaw, the Covid lead for Tower Hamlets, said: “My officers risked their own lives to apprehend a group of people who appeared to have no care for themselves or for protecting the lives of others with this brazen breach of the current restrictions.

“This activity was part of our ongoing partnership work in Tower Hamlets to support our communities by targeting those involved in anti-social behaviour, gangs and drug supply.

"My officers will continue to patrol Tower Hamlets in an attempt to reduce anti-social behaviour and to enforce the Covid legislation where necessary.”
