The Moroccan security on Sunday seized 4.9 tonnes of cannabis in the central city of Ait Melloul.

According to a statement by the Moroccan police, the operation was part of an investigation undertaken following the seizure on Thursday of 2 tonnes and 10 kg of cannabis in the town of Oulad Malek.

Police raided many areas in different cities linked to this operation, as part of the efforts to dismantle this criminal organization that smuggled cannabis from Morocco to foreign countries.

The total quantity of the cannabis linked to this international drug trafficking network that have been seized in the last four days amounts to 13 tonnes and 802 kg, the statement said.

Many people were arrested during these operations for alleged links to drug trafficking network.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world’s largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
