UK: Live 420 event: Around 200 people gather at Castle Park to smoke cannabis

The celebration has been held on the Bristol green in previous years

Hundreds of people have gathered at Castle Park this afternoon (April 20) for the now-famous annual '420' celebration.

It is believed around 200 people have already gathered on the green and most are sat safely and in a socially-distanced manner in accordance with current Covid restrictions.

The ‘happening’ is understood to have its origins almost 50 years ago in California, but however it started, April 20 has become an international ‘counterculture holiday’, expressed now by smoking cannabis in public and focussing on legalising the drug - particularly at 4.20pm.

A similar gathering took place on the same site in 2019, with large crowds gathering to celebrate. However, there was little police presence at that event and it passed peacefully.

No such event took place in 2020 in Bristol as a result of the ongoing Covid lockdown.

Hundreds attend

Today's gathering has been exceptionally busy.

Plume of smoke

A huge plume of smoke erupted from the crowd as the clock hit 4:20 pm - the hour when people from across the globe celebrated cannabis.

More than 700 attend

Today's hot weather combined with the easing of some lockdown rules has resulted in today's 420 event being the biggest yet.
