UK: Police explain why they made no arrests as hundreds smoked cannabis in park for '420'

The 420 celebrations are believed to originate in the escapades of five friends from California

Police have explained why they made no arrests after hundreds gathered at Castle Park to smoke cannabis.

More than 700 people were seen at the Bristol city centre park celebrating '420' last Tuesday afternoon (April 20).

The 420 event takes place on that date most years in Bristol, although it was not held in 2020 due to coronavirus lockdown. It is in part a protest against laws criminalising cannabis, and in part a celebration of the Class B drug.

Gatherings of more than six people were not allowed when the event was held, although most people in attendance appeared to be sitting in socially distanced groups.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said: "We had no calls about issues in Castle Park relating to this and officers did not attend."

They added that to the best of their knowledge the force had no contact about the event beforehand.

The spokesperson said: "There are no 101 or 999 logs relating to it on April 20 and from what I can tell there were no Covid breaches reported on that day via 101 or online for that area either. Therefore there are no ongoing enquiries in relation to this."

Bristol Live reported a "huge plume of smoke erupted from the crowd" in Castle Park as the clock hit 4.20 pm.

The 420 celebrations are believed to be rooted in the escapades of a group of friends from San Rafael high school in California, according to the BBC.

In 1971, five teenagers from the school came into possession of a hand-drawn map which appeared to show a marijuana crop at Point Reyes, north-west of San Francisco.

The friends met after school at 4.20pm and went in search. They never found the plot, but the group started using the term 420 as a code for marijuana, which spread to friends and acquaintances, including members of the Grateful Dead rock band.
