UK: South Derbyshire MP arranges meeting with government minister on cannabis medicine trials

South Derbyshire MP Heather wheeler recently arranged a meeting to discuss the benefits of the use of medical cannabis.

The meeting was arranged between between Minister Jo Churchill and Billy and Charlotte Caldwell.

And as a result, the government encouraged the I am Billy Foundation to discuss their proposals with the National Institute of Health Research.

The campaign works to raise awareness and promote the potential benefits of using legally prescribed Cannabis based Medicines.

The local MP said there is an increasing amount of evidence to show the benefits of legal Medical Cannabis to treat various illnesses. By allowing this to be prescribed by the NHS it could save money but more important, countless lives and help patients symptoms with illnesses such as Epilepsy, Parkinson’s and MS.

Currently medical cannabis is legal, but there is no ongoing government-funded clinical research into the efficiency of the drug, Mrs Wheeler says.

The I am Billy Campaign is a campaign to introduce trials to treat a host of medical conditions with legally prescribed cannabis-based medicines.

“I commend Billy and Charlotte for their determination to make this happen in particular groups of patients like Billy with Refractory Epilepsy who are already accessing Cannabis based Medicine via hard to come by NHS prescriptions."

A government spokesperson said:

“Our sympathies are with all patients and families dealing with rare and hard to treat conditions.

“Health Minister Jo Churchill met with Charlotte Caldwell to discuss the goals of the I am Billy Foundation. Like all other applicants of research funding, we have encouraged the Foundation to discuss their proposals with the National Institute of Health Research.

“Licensed cannabis-based medicines are funded by the NHS where there is clear evidence of their quality, safety and effectiveness.”
