Italy to hold referendum on decriminalizing cannabis after 500,000 sign petition in a week Sam Riches The Province Tuesday 21 Sep 2021 Italy will hold a popular referendum after half a million people and counting signed a petition to decriminalize cannabis. “More than 500,000 online signatures in just a week for the #ReferendumCannabis,” the campaigners wrote on their official Facebook page. “We celebrate them by thanking you one by one.” According to Reuters, a nationwide vote on the issue could be held early next year. “This is an extraordinary result, but it’s not surprising,” noted the committee behind the campaign. “The speed of the support shows the desire for change on cannabis.” The referendum would also remove Italy’s prohibition on cultivating psychoactive substances, reports Marijuana Moment, but production and manufacturing would remain prohibited. The campaign behind the petition will continue to push for signatures before the end-of-month deadline to ensure it stands up to the scrutiny of the Supreme Court of Cassation, the highest court of Italy, reports Agenzia Giornialistica Italia. “Legalizing does not mean promoting consumption, but making it safer and more informed,” said advocates behind the campaign, per CNN. “If cannabis were legal, it would put an end to unnecessary trials for small amounts of the drug and ensure that patients who use it to relieve their excruciating pain will never have to face a court again,” they added. While legal for medical and industrial use, cannabis is strictly regulated in Italy. Being found in possession of small amounts, usually exceeding 1.5 grams, could result in fines and the suspension of personal documents, such as driver’s licences, or a court order for rehabilitation treatment, according to PevGrow. Earlier this month, Italian news outlet ANSA reported that reforms for small-scale cultivation were approved by the Lower House justice committee, allowing residents to grow up to four plants at home. The reform measures also increased the potential penalty for trafficking from six to 10 years. https://theprovince.com/cannabis-news/italy-to-hold-referendum-on-decriminalizing-cannabis-after-500000-sign-petition-in-a-week
