The amount of money Illinois has made from cannabis sales in the last three months has nearly doubled since the same time last year.

A new state report shows that cannabis tax revenues have grown almost 89% in the first quarter of FY22 compared to the same since last year.

In Q1 of FY22 (July, August, September 2021), the state collected $66.2 million in cannabis excise taxes.

In Q1 of FY21 (July, august, September 2020), the state collected $35 million in cannabis excise taxes.

The increase in revenues also means an increase for where the funds are sent, which include the general revenue fund, criminal justice info projects, drug treatment, DHS community services, local government distributive fund, and budget stabilization.

Each of those categories saw funding that grew by 92.5%. Only cannabis expungement funding shrank, by 8.9%.

For the local government distributive fund, allocation grew from $2.3 million in FY21 to $4.5 million in FY22, which spells good news for municipalities like Springfield.

Ward 1 Alderman Shawn Gregory explains that Springfield sets aside 1.5% of the city's cannabis tax revenue for economic development on the east side.

"I think we're quite unique in the way that we did it. We really tried to stay true to the intent of law, and really make sure that the tax money benefits the areas hit hardest by the war on drugs. And for here in Springfield that's the east side of town," Gregory said.

Those that work in the cannabis industry in Sangamon County also say that the industry is simply more established now compared to last year and therefore is bringing in more money.
