UK: Call to legalise cannabis rejected

The government set out measures to tackle violent crime on Wednesday, at the same time insisting there would be no moves to decriminalise cannabis.

Ministers are keen to bolster the law-and-order credentials of the governing Labour party after last year's British crime survey identified increases in robberies and thefts.

Jack Straw, the home secretary, published a guide to best practice on CD-Rom to help communities tackle street crime. He also announced plans for a summit with mobile phone companies to discuss ways to combat handset theft.

Mr Straw also confirmed that the government would reject an influential report's call for relaxing the law against cannabis by rating it as a class C rather than a class B drug
